Serra Catholic’s girls basketball program has had its share of great players over the years.
This season marked the last for one of those wearing the maroon and gold, Rayna Andrews.
Andrews finished her career as an Eagle averaging 17 points per game and 13 rebounds per game, claiming honors as the Mon Valley Independent-BeeGraphix Super 6 Girls Player of the Year.
“All the versatility she possessed, there’s not going to be another player like her,” Serra Catholic head coach Bill Cleary said. “She never came out of the game, by far, she was the player we relied on the most.”
Andrews helped lead the Eagles to a 17-5 overall record and a section championship with an 11-1 record in Section 2-2A. Serra Catholic reached the WPIAL semifinals where it lost to Laurel, and advanced to the PIAA tournament. Penns Manor ended the Eagles’ season in the first round.
“I saw her after that Penns Manor game and I just told her, ‘You know, you put together a really fine season,’” Cleary said. “Yes, she averaged 17 points per game, but her rebounding is what set her apart.”
