U.S. Steel is delaying construction of its $1 billion project at the Mon Valley Works and will take aggressive action to secure its long-term future amid the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent changes in global oil and gas markets.
The steelmaker recently decided to delay construction of the endless casting and rolling line and cogeneration facility at its Mon Valley Works, which is comprised of the Clairton Coke Works, the Irvin Works in West Mifflin and the Edgar Thompson Plant in Braddock. This decision came on the heels of earlier plans to idle blast furnaces at the Gary Works in Indiana and Granite City Works in Illinois, and idling the iron and steel-making facilities at Great Lakes Works.
The Allegheny County Health Department announced, after consulting with U.S. Steel, that a temporary pause in the permitting process “is appropriate given the challenges posed to the public comment process while COVID-19 public health orders are in effect in Allegheny County.”
U.S. Steel said it agrees with a pause “during this time of social distancing precautions implemented by the county.”
