Several homes in Donora mistakenly got posted with shut-off notices Thursday from the Authority of the Borough of Charleroi, but Mayor Jim McDonough wants residents to know their water is not being shut off.
In a council meeting on Facebook Live last night, McDonough said after a few residents contacted him about the notices, he contacted the authority’s solicitor, who indicated it was done by mistake.
“They thought they were going to repost to say that they’re not going to shut it off, but I do not want any of the public utilities going door to door,” McDonough said. “I think it was just something that wasn’t thought through before it was done.”
On March 13, the state Public Utility Commission issued an emergency order prohibiting electric, natural gas, water, wastewater, telecommunication and steam utility service terminations for as long as Gov. Tom Wolf’s disaster declaration due to COVID-19 is in effect.
The order stated that it is “beyond argument that the provision of public utility service is necessary for the safety of the public. This is especially the case under the current challenges that resulted in the proclamation of a pandemic emergency.”
