Monessen will have its regularly scheduled meeting tonight, but doors will be closed to the public and two council members don’t plan to attend in person.
The city announced a change in protocol for the meeting amid emergency declarations due to COVID-19 and Gov. Tom Wolf’s stay-at-home order.
Some council members and Mayor Matt Shorraw will meet at 7 p.m. at city hall, but the public will not be permitted inside.
Councilman Anthony Orzechowski said he will participate via conference call — if he is provided a telephone number.
Shorraw stated in a press release the decision to close the meeting was made to protect residents and elected officials.
Orzechowski said he was never consulted about the decision and does not understand why the meeting is not being held virtually.
“As with most things, this is no different,” Orzechowski said. “There was no discussion. When I asked why we were not having a virtual meeting, I got no response.”
