When Frazier and Charleroi, two of the top teams in Sec. 17, collided at Vets Field, a lot of fireworks were expected.
And the large turnout of fans didn’t leave disappointed after watching a game, which featured a little bit of everything as the Commodores came away with a 14-12 win.
Want to know what happened?
Check out these tidbits:
• The Cougars turned four double plays and still lost the game – and their coach Bruno Pappasergi was given the thumb for the first time in his career for arguing an out call at first in the bottom of the seventh inning.
• Among the 26 runs and 23 hits the teams combined for, there were three long home runs, two by Frazier’s Jim Sample.
• In the second inning, the teams combined to score nine runs and send 19 batters to the plate.
• There was a suicide squeeze play in which a wild pitch was thrown and the runner was still out at the plate.
• One of Frazier’s ace pitchers was knocked out of the box early and a freshman came on to give the Cougar batters fits.
And, when it was over, the Commodores (9-1) regained some precious breathing room at the top, thanks in part to Monessen’s 10-8 upset win over Geibel. Charleroi and Geibel, both 7-3 and tied for second, meet in a crucial contest Tuesday at Vets Field.
