Student athletes continue to wonder when or if they’ll ever get the chance to suit up and return to their respective fields of play in the foreseeable future.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, winter sports came to a sudden halt a few weeks ago with the PIHL championships among the events that are still postponed.
Spring sports are also in jeopardy as practices were stopped last month before the season began.
Uncertain times have created worries for a number of student athletes, especially seniors who play both a winter sport that has been put on hold and a spring sport that has yet to begin.
That is the case for a few Ringgold hockey players, including captain Justin Day.
A senior at Charleroi Area High School, Day is among several local students who play hockey for Ringgold through a co-op agreement.
The veteran forward was excited to lead his team into the PIHL Class B championship game against Carrick, which was scheduled to take place March 17 at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.
That was until the coronavirus began to spread throughout the country.
“It has been pretty rough on everybody since we don’t know if we’ll get one last time to step onto the ice this season,” Day said. “Everyone on our team, including the coaches, wants to play the championship game really bad.”
