Monessen council will consider creating the new position of city clerk at its voting meeting next Tuesday.
In a closed workshop meeting last night, Mayor Matt Shorraw said he will ask for approval to interview applicants for the position.
Shorraw said that while Judy Taylor was city administrator — until he fired her during his first meeting back after a two-year absence — she was doing the jobs of administrator and city clerk.
Shorraw said John Harhai is currently handling both roles, but “ideally, that should be two positions I think.”
Shorraw said he’s going to see if there is additional funding to help with the cost of a city clerk’s salary.
Harhai said a city clerk would concentrate on the human relations side of things, working with the employees’ benefits packages. The accounting staff would report to the clerk as well.
The city administrator, Harhai said, would oversee the operations of the city.
Shorraw said he’s hopeful that the city will advertise the position and find someone qualified, but added again that he would like to find the funding for the salary.
