A Charleroi Regional police officer under investigation for drug-related crimes has resigned from his position as K-9 officer.
William M. Gardner, 39, is charged with intent to possess a controlled substance, obstruction of administrative law or other government functions, misapplication of entrusted property, receiving stolen property and theft from a motor vehicle.
The Charleroi Regional Police Board unanimously accepted Gardner’s resignation Wednesday.
Chairman Bill Lee said the board is disheartened by the situation.
“We remain saddened by the events that have led to Mr. Gardner no longer being a member of the Charleroi Regional Police Department,” Lee said. “However, the public must know that this board takes very seriously the honesty and integrity that our officers must display, and that the misconduct with which Mr. Gardner has been charged is simply unacceptable.”
