Joey Caruso developed a great appreciation for the game of basketball at a young age.
Whether he was watching the sport on TV or listening to his grandfather Joe’s stories about when he played at Charleroi Area High School, basketball has always been a huge part of Caruso’s life.
“Playing college basketball has always been like a dream to me. Watching it on TV and thinking one day that could be me has always fascinated me,” said Caruso, a senior at Charleroi. “My love for the game and what really pushed me to try and do great things in basketball has been my Pap Caru. Hearing all of his stroies about when he played and having him push me to get better every chance he got was a real booster for me and gave me the motivation and inspiration I needed to take it to the next level.”
Caruso will indeed be taking his game to the next level when he continues his academic and basketball careers at Waynesburg University.
He signed his national letter of intent to play for the Yellow Jackets and head coach Tim Fusina, a Charleroi native, on Wednesday.
“I have taken great pride in my basketball game ever since I was a little kid,” said Caruso, the son of Joe and Holly Caruso of Fallowfield Township.
“To see all the hard work and effort pay off for me in the end is a true honor. Being able to go to a university with the second best nursing program in the state is the best incentive for me in the long run, too.”
