Remember When?: Local athletes seek state titles in throwing events

When the PIAA championship takes place this weekend at Shippensburg University no area high school athletes will compete on the track. But go over to the javelin throwing area, and it might seem like home.
Ringgold High’s Stephanie Kuhn and Beverly Rogers and Charleroi High’s Jared Dumm are competing in the event — with each having a shot at a medal.
Elizabeth Forward’s Gretchen Chomas will be competing in the discus after finishing eighth in the WPIAL Class AAA finals with a toss of 116.1 feet, an inch over the PIAA qualifier.
To medal, one must finish in the top eight.
Kuhn, the number one seed in the girls division, looks to have the best chance. She’s coming off a personal-best throw of 140.9 feet at the WPIAL Class AAA championships last week at Baldwin.
Kuhn not only won the event, she came within 10 feet of the school record, which was set by Emily Cokinos in 1994 at the state meet.
Setting the record would be something special, admits the 16-year-old junior, but she has another goal in mind right now — a state title.
