A few weeks before the start of the regular season in March, Ringgold head coach Don Roberts started practice by looking at the banners in the school’s gym.
Players and coaches took time to witness all that has been accomplished in the history of Ringgold sports, but they realized something was missing.
“That day we talked about how the goal was to be the first team in Ringgold history to win the WPIAL championship,” Roberts said. “Winning the championship was the goal all year. We believed we could do it even though a lot of people doubted us.”
The Rams have checked off most of their goals.
They ended a long losing streak to Belle Vernon Area and won the program’s first section title in more than a decade.
The fourth-seeded Rams hope to check off another one today when they face No. 3 South Fayette in the WPIAL Class 4A championship game at Wild Things Park in Washington.
Ringgold (16-3) is playing in the title game for the first time since 1999.
“That is a big deal for these guys,” Roberts said. “All of their hard work and dedication is the reason they have turned around the baseball program.”
