Crews were working Tuesday to restore water and natural gas service to homes in Washington Township affected by suspected mine subsidence Monday night.
A resident of the Fairhope neighborhood contacted Fayette County 911 around 6:15 p.m. Monday to say it felt like her house had moved.
“The fire department found major cracks in the road and the water line broken. The gas line did not rupture,” said Washington Township 911 coordinator Kelly Parshall. “Rob Bennett, the fire chief, worked with the gas and water companies to contain the situation.”
Parshall said People’s Gas put in shut-off valves blocking off the area affected by the subsidence Monday night. Crews were back in the neighborhood Tuesday morning to check again for any leaks and to restore service.
“The water’s been turned off to 20 to 25 houses. Ten or 11 structures have damage, several with major structural damage, and it’s still being evaluated,” Parshall said Tuesday morning.
