CLARION – California High’s baseball team saved the best for last.
As a result, the Trojans are a win away from advancing to the PIAA Class A championship game for the first time in 22 years.
Trailing 7-6 and down to its last two outs with no one on, California exploded for 10 runs in the seventh inning en route to a 16-9 quarterfinal victory over Coudersport at Clarion University.
The Trojans (19-6) will play District 10 champ Villa Maria Academy (17-8) at a site to be determined in the Western Region final with the winner advancing to the PIAA title contest at Altoona’s Blair County Ballpark.
California coach Don Hartman didn’t know how to respond after the Trojans’ eighth straight win.
“We flat out stunk today,” he started. “We had our worst defensive effort. Six passed balls, six walks, missed signs. We’re young and it showed with all the mental mistakes.”
Coudersport (12-4) scored four its runs on passed balls or wild pitches.
