Charleroi students to re-vote on graduation plan

Charleroi Area seniors may get to graduate from high school the way they started it — together.
After students received word on finalized graduation plans last week, not all seniors — or parents — believed their voices were heard.
More than 15 parents and half a dozen seniors attended the school board meeting Tuesday night to appeal to the board to reconsider its current plan, which includes four separate graduation ceremonies an hour apart in the campus parking lot. They would take place July 1 with specific arrival and departure times for graduates and their guests.
After an executive session, the board agreed to allow the senior class to re-vote for an alternate plan that will include an option for them to receive their diplomas together.
Superintendent Dr. Ed Zelich said students will participate in a vote this week that will include an option for them to stand together as a class.
He declined to provide further details of the options that will be available, but said he is happy the board listened to the community.
“It is about coming together and listening to what our parents and students had to say,” Zelich said. “We heard them and we are going to let our senior class decide, with different options than they had the first time around.
“The most important thing we can do is listen and problem solve and be open minded.”
