The weather is warming up, the Mon Valley is in the green phase of the state’s reopening plan and residents have been given the go-ahead to head outdoors and enjoy the bounty of nature throughout southwestern Pennsylvania.
There’s lots to enjoy about the region, including lush woods, nature preserves, hiking and biking trails, riverside fishing spots and more. But the Allegheny County Health Department cautions outdoors enthusiasts to remain vigilant for a small but mighty pest that could be lurking on low hanging branches or in tall grass — ticks.
ACHD Director Dr. Debra Bogen strongly encourages people to protect themselves when heading outside. She said many ticks in our region carry the bacteria that causes Lyme disease and less commonly carry other disease-causing organisms.
Lyme disease and other tick-born illnesses can be severe if not treated properly.
“You can find ticks in our county and city parks and even in your own backyard. The risk of getting Lyme disease is high in Allegheny County and Pittsburgh,” Bogen said. “Taking precautionary steps before and after spending time outdoors is critical to decrease your chances of being bitten by a tick. Lyme disease, if not treated, can lead to symptoms that affect the joints, heart and nervous system.”
