Kaitlyn Slagus is used to winning.
She did it as a high school player at Belle Vernon Area and again when she moved on to play in college at Bucknell.
So it comes as no surprise that Slagus is already in the books with a win as a coach.
Slagus earned her first coaching victory in the Mon Valley Independent Summer Basketball League as her Lee Supply squad defeated Cedarbrook, 46-26, in the finale of Monday’s season opening triple header at Marx’s Court Time Sports Center in Elizabeth Township.
“It felt really good, especially to get on a run and keep the girls running like that,” Slagus said. “I think they gained confidence they will have with them the rest of the season. Starting the season with a win is always a positive.”
Slagus received immediate contributions from two of her top three draft picks in Thomas Jefferson’s Graci Fairman (first round) and Woodland Hills’ Jasmyn Fisher (third round).
Fairman scored eight of her game-high 14 points in the first half, while Fisher had six in the first half and 12 in the win. Belle Vernon Area’s Jenna Dawson was the third Lee Supply (1-0) player in double figures, finishing with 10 points.
“I played under Graci’s mom (Lisa Fairman) so I knew how hard she has been working this summer and I knew how tall she had gotten since the last time I saw her five years ago,” Slagus said. “Jasmyn was a baller at tryouts, too. I knew if I could grab them both, they could just play off one another and be fun to watch.”
