If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at fishing but didn’t want to make the commitment of obtaining a license, Saturday may be your best opportunity.
The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is hosting the second of its two annual Fish for Free Days on the Fourth of July. The first one was May 24.
The event allows residents and non-residents to try their hand at fishing legally on the state’s waterways without the need for a fishing license.
Trout/salmon and Lake Erie permits are also not required.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fishermen are required to practice social distancing as well as follow state fishing regulations.
According to Joe Vaccari, owner of Joe’s Tackle Unlimited in West Newton, fishing is a perfect activity to get away from pandemic shutdowns.
“With all the other sports being shut down, fishing is it,” he said. “There are many components of fishing. You get away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. You get to do some introspection on yourself and you get to listen to nature. You also learn self sufficiency by fishing, which allows you learn how to feed yourself.”
Efforts to influence people to head to lakes and waterways with rod and reel in hand may be paying off.
