With no outs in the top of the eighth inning and Nya Adams standing at second base with the potential go-ahead run in a 1-1 game, Rams Fast Pitch coach Gregg Adams oozed confidence.
He knew his team was in a good spot.
“We got lucky with the right kid going to second base there,” Adams said of his senior daughter. “That kid wants to run.”
Run is exactly what Nya Adams did in the crucial scenario Wednesday evening. In fact, when she started running, she didn’t stop until she slid across home plate.
One batter into the extra frame and with the international tie-breaker rule in effect, the senior and Edinboro recruit took off and stole third base before scoring on an errant throw to give Rams Fast Pitch the eventual game-winning run in a dramatic 3-1 victory over Falcons Fast Pitch in a Mon Valley Independent Senior Swing softball tournament matchup in Perryopolis.
Nya Adams had flied out to right field with a runner on first base the inning prior and, having committed the last out, was required to start the extra frame on second base.
“In her way of thinking, she planned that,” Gregg Adams said with a laugh. “She had a nice hit the previous inning and we could have gotten those runs in that at-bat, but the girl made a nice (defensive) play.”
