Diane Raible of White Oak, who operates Dolly’s Dogs, is no stranger to rescuing, loving and finding homes for dogs who overcome unfathomable obstacles.
Her organization, which is a branch of Paws Across Pittsburgh nonprofit animal rescue, saves, cares for and finds foster or forever homes for dogs with disabilities and specialized medical conditions.
On Thursday, the Dolly’s Dogs family welcomed a new member: Sunray, a 7-year-old rottweiler who was scheduled to be euthanized Monday at a “high-kill” shelter in Miami, according to Raible.
With the help of Rosa Fond of Humans and Animals United, Dolly’s Dogs was able to prevent the animal’s death.
Sunray, who currently doesn’t have the use of her back legs, was taken to a veterinarian and boarding facility in Florida by a group of “wonderful volunteers” before journeying 17 hours by car to White Oak, Raible said.
The dog’s eyes were crusted over and she tested positive for heartworm. The Florida veterinarian believes Sunray’s leg injury to be related to trauma, not a neurological condition.
Raible said there’s a chance Sunray, who was adoringly being called “Sunny” on Thursday, was hit by a car. She is scheduled to be seen Monday by the staff at Northern Pike Veterinary Hospital in Monroeville to have a second opinion.
When Raible took Sunray out of the cage she had been traveling in and sat down in the grass to look at her legs, the dog immediately started kissing her and sat in her lap.
