Donora sets fire pit regulations

Donora passed an ordinance this week that will allow residents to own recreational fire pits, but those who are interested will have to get an inspection and purchase an annual permit.
Borough council members and Administrator Terri Petroske have discussed the issue at the last few meetings and agreed that because so many residents already have fire pits that aren’t regulated, it’s a good idea to set rules and make sure the pits are safe throughout the borough.
The ordinance only pertains to recreational fires, not natural gas, propane or charcoal grills used in food preparation.
Fire pits must be constructed out of masonry, metal or other non-combustible rigid materials and they can’t have a fire area greater than 3 feet across or 2 feet high.
Residents will have to keep a method of putting out the flames nearby, such as garden hoses, fire extinguishers or dirt or sand.
Residents can burn paper, but not paper that has been used to absorb oils or paper that is plastic coated or contains anything toxic.
