White Oak’s annual community summer event is canceled, but one part of the tradition will carry on.
Borough Manager John Palyo said a fireworks display is still planned even though White Oak Community Day 2020 is canceled as a result of coronavirus concerns.
“It is the intent to have the fireworks display on Aug. 1 as scheduled. However, the park will be closed and we encourage residents to watch the display from the comfort and safety of their homes,” Palyo said.
The rain date is Aug. 2. Fireworks are shot off from Heritage Hill Park, which is where the Community Day festivities are held each year. The park is also the site of Heritage Hill Pool, which will not open this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Mayor Ina Jean Marton said she intends for Community Day to make a triumphant return in August 2021.
In other business, council approved an intergovernmental transfer for the donation of two police vehicles from the White Oak Borough Police Department to the McKeesport Area School District’s police department.
Councilman Lou Bender, chairman of the public safety committee, said both vehicles, a 2008 Dodge Charger with approximately 106,000 miles and a 2008 Dodge Charger with approximately 81,000 miles, are being donated “as is, in their current condition.”
