As local school districts try to determine the safest way for students to return to school, Pennsylvania is preparing for a change in its educational leadership.
Secretary of Education Pedro Rivera will resign effective Oct. 1. The move was announced Tuesday in an email addressed to leaders across the state.
Rivera was appointed by Gov. Tom Wolf and confirmed unanimously by the Senate in 2015. He will soon take over as president of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, becoming an “educational stakeholder to join in the fight for equity, access and opportunity.”
Rivera served as superintendent of the School District of Lancaster prior to his appointment to Wolf’s cabinet and continues to live there with his family.
“As I shared with PDE staff earlier today, this was not an easy decision,” Rivera said. “Leading the team at the department of education and serving under Wolf has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. However, I am comforted in knowing that I will be able to continue serving Pennsylvania students in my new position and continue to deliver on our collective vision of equity and innovation.”
