It stood for more than a century, and the chapel at Monongahela Cemetery was beginning to show its age.
So in the spring of 2019, the cemetery’s board of directors decided to give the historic structure a facelift.
And after months of fundraising by the cemetery’s staff and designing by architect Terry Necciai, renovation to the chapel began earlier this week, with Joel Weygandt of Weygandt Construction beginning phase one of the process.
The early stages of the renovation are divided into five projects: carpentry and restoration of missing wood moldings in the ceiling and baseboard areas, painting of the historic ceiling, installation of a new engineered flooring, electrical work including six new pendant lights added in place of the current recessed lights and electrical outlets added at the baseboard and insulation being installed.
“The chapel did need major restorations,” said Monongahela Cemetery Board President Richard Bucchianeri. “This is the first time we’ve had it restored.”
