Superintendent Dr. Lisa Duval announced Friday afternoon that South Allegheny School District students will begin the 2020-21 school year remotely.

She hopes to use a “phased approach” to eventually physically bring students back to the classroom.

Duval said the first day of school is slated for Aug. 24. Teachers will work in-person from their empty classrooms to deliver their lessons via the district’s distance learning platform.

“The decision on reopening has been one that has weighed heavily on all of our minds,” Duval wrote in a letter posted Friday to the district website. “Right now, our primary focus is and will continue to be doing our absolute best to provide a safe and healthy environment for our students, faculty and staff who make up our South Allegheny Family.”

She said the school board supports the administration’s plan to use a phased reopening approach and that the district will “continually plan and reevaluate, making adaptations where necessary that focus on our core principle of providing safety and well being for our school community.”
