White Oak: Yard sale might continue without borough approval

White Oak recently announced via social media that its community-wide yard sale has been canceled this year due to coronavirus concerns.

But a few borough leaders said at Monday’s meeting that they’re hearing some residents may be organizing the event anyway.

Borough Manager John Palyo said he doesn’t think it’s a good idea for residents to be holding a large-scale event.

The yard sale was scheduled for Aug. 29 with a rain date of Aug. 30. The borough announced Aug. 12 via Facebook that it was calling off the sale “with the health and safety of residents in mind.”

“I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter about people doing it anyway,” Councilman George Pambacas said to Mayor Ina Jean Marton. “You might want to let the (police) chief know to have his people out that day to watch the traffic.”

“We put it on Facebook that it was canceled,” the mayor said.

“I saw it there and other people said, ‘Well, we’re still going to do it at our house’ and stuff like that,” Pambacas said.

“That’s the problem,” Palyo interjected. “We’re trying to, not that we really want to, but out of an abundance of caution, we’re canceling our borough-organized activities because they would be causing people to come into the community and gather.
