Carroll Township supervisors assured residents on Greenridge Drive affected by mine subsidence that they’re aware of the situation and working on a solution.
At Tuesday morning’s meeting, supervisors said they’ve had discussions with the state Department of Environmental Protection and Ohio-based coal mining company Murray Energy.
Supervisor Ken Hillman said approximately 10 to 20 houses on Greenridge Drive have been affected. The subsidence has caused damage to homes, water line breaks and on Tuesday morning, a gas leak.
“We’re hoping to get action with the DEP,” Hillman said. “We’re hoping to get answers in the next couple months.”
Mine subsidence is the movement of the Earth’s surface that results from the collapse of underground coal and clay mines.
“It’s not the first time we’ve had subsidence,” board President Tom Rapp said.
Hillman said solutions could range from the township fixing the houses to making offers on the homes.
