MVI sports set to broadcast games of the week this season
By the Mon Valley Independent
With no fans, or a very minimal amount, in the stands at local football games this season, the Mon Valley Independent and the MVI Sports Department are proud to announce broadcasts of our Friday Night Game of the Week.
Beginning this Friday and throughout the high school football season, the Mon Valley Independent will bring you audio of the top games in our coverage area.
Ashley Chase will deliver play by play with sports editor Jeremy Sellew or assistant sports editor Jose Negron on the color commentary.
“I am thrilled to help provide live broadcast coverage of high school football to the Mon Valley this season, especially given the circumstances and limited number of fans allowed to attend games in person,” Chase said. “After broadcasting for more than a decade and cover the Mon Valley teams the last few years, I know the passion the local community has for its high school sports. I hope I can capture the excitement of the games and bring the action to fans wherever they may be.”
“We’re really excited to be able to bring the games to fans around the Mon Valley during these unprecedented times,” Sellew said. “Adding someone like Ashley with a sports broadcasting background to be able to deliver play by play is nothing but an advantage to our listeners and fans.
“Plus, with myself and Jose doing the color commentary, it gives us the opportunity to continue to provide our print readers with game stories in our Saturday edition.”
The MVI is the only local newspaper to get your stories and results in the next day’s edition.
Broadcasts kickoff this week with a Class 4A Big 8 Conference matchup as Belle Vernon Area travels to conference newcomer McKeesport.
“I can’t think of a better way to kick off this new venture with MVI Sports than this game Friday,” Sellew said. “It’s two storied programs that have read all about each other’s success over the past few years. Now they get to line up nose to nose on the field. It has the potential to be a classic to open the season in Week 1.”
The Mon Valley Independent began broadcasting and streaming games over the summer, providing MVI Summer Basketball League games when fans weren’t permitted into Marx’s Court Time Sports Center due to COVID-19 gathering limitations.
Links to the audio broadcast will be available on monvalleyindependent.com or www.mixlr/mvilive as well as on Facebook and Twitter at Mon Valley Independent-Sports and @MVI_Sports.
“We want to make sure all those people that would normally pack stadiums under the Friday Night Lights, still have the opportunity to follow games and their favorite players,” Sellew said. “It’s not going to be the same, but our job is to bring the game to our readers. Now we’re expanding that to bring our listeners to the games. We’re excited to be able to use this venture to continue providing the absolute best coverage of our local athletes.”
