Valley Oldies: By any name, trolleys carried many memories

A recent column about the end of trolley cars as a means of transportation in this mid-Monongahela Valley sparked welcome response from readers of this weekly missive.
One of my favorites came from Ruth Ann Yatsko of Donora, a longtime colleague at The Valley Independent. Ruth enjoyed a distinguished career as a reporter and then copy editor of that newspaper.
“Your column brought back memories of the trolley (which we referred to as a streetcar) that ran past my house between Second and Third streets on McKean Avenue in Donora,” she wrote.
“I remember how visitors would comment about the noise when the trolley went by, which I think was every hour on the half-hour. To us, it was just part of the sounds of living on the main street in Donora.”
