The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh has temporarily moved all Serra Catholic High School students to online learning as a result of two students testing positive for COVID-19.
The high school building in McKeesport will remain closed through Monday, and sports programs have been suspended through the weekend. That means tonight’s season-opening football game against Steel Valley has been canceled.
Other Serra Catholic sports will not be impacted by the suspension as their seasons are slated to begin next week.
Diocese spokeswoman Ellen Maddy said the decision to move students to online learning was made to align with protocols set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Pennsylvania Department of Health and recommendations from the Allegheny Health Department.
Students who tested positive for the virus have followed health protocols and have been in quarantine, according to the diocese.
“Fortunately, neither of the students are experiencing symptoms,” the diocese said. “According to protocols, students deemed to have been within close contact with a person who has tested positive will be notified individually and be required to quarantine.”
