Mon Valley residents may receive a helping hand getting out to vote on Election Day.
At Thursday’s meeting, Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority board members discussed the possibility of utilizing buses to help residents get to polling places Nov. 3.
The topic was introduced by board member John Lorenzo, who said he was approached by a large number of senior citizens who hope to vote in person on Election Day rather than rely on the vote-by-mail option.
“A lot of the senior residents have reached out saying they prefer voting in person,” Lorenzo said. “They were wondering if we could see if it’s feasible to have something available to residents.
“I think it would be a great opportunity here, even if it’s something little. We’re not going to get everybody. If we have the capability, I think it’s something we could really utilize.”
Lorenzo said he was surprised at the number of residents who contacted him.
“I’ve received a lot of phone calls,” he said. “A lot of senior citizens have been using Facebook Messenger saying ‘We want to get there in person.’ A lot of people don’t have the transportation to get to polling places.”
