More than a dozen Mon Valley communities have been designated as part of a Regional Enterprise Zone.
The Mon Valley Alliance, a local economic development organization, was awarded a Five-Year Regional Enterprise Zone for 14 municipalities through the Keystone Communities Program by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
Charleroi, Donora, Dunley, Carroll Township, Fallowfield Township, Speers, Monongahela, West Brownsville, Allenport, Belle Vernon, Brownsville, North Belle Vernon, Monessen and West Newton are involved.
Speers Mayor Bill Lee said he is excited for the opportunities it will bring. There are currently three projects located in the borough.
“We are pleased to work with the Alliance to increase the employment opportunities in the Speers Industrial Park and improve the quality of life for our residents,” Lee said.
North Belle Vernon Council President Brett Berish said the borough is excited to partner with neighboring communities.
“We are simply looking forward to working together with our neighbors to make the Valley a better place,” he said, “and hopefully bring businesses to our communities and showcase our towns.”
Municipalities joined at no cost to taxpayers. The enterprise zone allows businesses to expand and create jobs while receiving tax credits.
