Since suffering a 5-0 loss to Connellsville on Sept. 15, not much has phased the Belle Vernon Area girls soccer team.
Entering Monday, the Leopards had outscored their opponents, 34-1, over their last four games and posted three shutouts during that span.
To say they’ve played like a team motivated by defeat might be an understatement.
“When we lost that game at Connellsville, our goal was to take it one game at a time and keep checking off the list until we get to them again,” BVA head coach Tracy Lovett said. “It was about taking that game and that loss and letting that motivate us to get better each game. I believe our game is evolving every single game.”
The Leopards’ evolution continued Monday as they extended their winning streak to five games with a 4-1 victory over Laurel Highlands in Section 2-3A play at James Weir Stadium.
BVA (5-1, 4-1) scored a trio of first-half goals in the triumph.
“We were able to generate a lot of offense in the first half and we had a lot of quality chances,” Lovett said. “I liked seeing that because LH had a lot in the back. They had sometimes six or seven in the back, so for us to be able to work through that, it’s big. We have seen that before and struggled with it a bit.”
