The Rostraver Township Historical Society has grown enough in the past three years that it’s had to put its monthly meetings on hold to comply with the COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings.
But that doesn’t mean the organization has been idle.
The group has increased its membership from about 40 to 300 members since 2017. Vice President Stu Boyd said before the pandemic began, monthly meetings attracted 70 to 80 participants. In addition to the monthly historic programs, the organization has been focusing on building renovations and organizing its collections.
“We sat down and did a master plan. The plan is to preserve Rostraver history,” Boyd said. “That’s what this room is about. The rest of the museum can be general history.”
The new Rostraver Room officially opened this week, though the museum itself is currently only open by appointment. Boyd said scrapbooks kept by residents over the years have provided invaluable photos and documents. A montage of photos can be found on the room’s walls.
“The main thing is photographic history,” he said. “We’re trying to get people to get into their albums, their attics and their cellars and not throw things away, but to let us look at it.”
