Even though he moved away from Monongahela more than 40 years ago, Randy Walters’ heart is still in the Mon Valley.
A Phoenix, Ariz., resident since 1975, Walters never forgot the life lessons he received while growing up in Mon City, and he’ll share those memories when he appears as the guest speaker for the Monongahela Area Historical Society’s first-ever virtual speaker series “Roots, Resilience and Rebellions,” scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
A 1971 graduate of Monongahela Valley Catholic High School, Walters entered the U.S. Navy and eventually settled in Arizona with his wife Cynthia, a former Charleroi resident.
A retired restaurateur, Walters now spends his time riding his bike and writing.
He’s featured with 50 other authors in the book “Love Meets Life.” His own book, “Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and Hugs,” is scheduled to be published by year’s end.
“My favorite thing to do is get up between 4:30 or 5 a.m., put on a pot of coffee and watch the sun rise,” Walters said from his Arizona home. “It’s a great way to start the day.
“And I’ll finish the day by watching ‘The Andy Griffith Show.’ With all the chaos in the world, it puts my mind in simpler times. I’m not stressed out. I’m trying to ease into retirement without getting old.”
