Nearly a decade removed from active military duty, Jefferson Hills resident Michael Thatcher continues to protect the public and serve as a community leader.
Thatcher, a 2002 Thomas Jefferson High School graduate, is now a magisterial district judge for Pleasant Hills, Jefferson Hills and South Park. He spent two years abroad in Afghanistan as a platoon commander for the 1st Battalion 6th Marine Regiment.
“I woke up one day while working in the family business of real estate development, which was great, but I wanted to do something here in the community that was leadership and service oriented,” said Thatcher, a 2006 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. “I hoped to bring my leadership experience as a Marine to the community.”
Even before graduating high school, Thatcher knew he wanted to enter the military, thanks to his father’s love of military history and his grandfather’s time in the service.
“My grandfather passed away when I was 16,” he recalled. “But I remember listening to him tell stories of being in the military. My grandfather was probably the one who got me into the military.”
