With case counts continuing to rise at the county, state and national levels, McKeesport Area School District announced Tuesday that — after consultation with public health agencies — classes will move to a virtual-only format for the three days leading into Thanksgiving break.
“After careful consideration and consultation with both the Pennsylvania and Allegheny (County) Health Departments, MASD will move to a fully remote, synchronous, learning model, for a three-day period,” the district stated in an “important message” posted to the website and Facebook page.
Synchronous learning refers to students engaging with and learning from their teacher at the same time with interactivity. Virtual learning days will occur Nov. 23, 24 and 25. Thanksgiving break is from Nov. 26 to 30.
Students who have been attending school in person via the hybrid learning model will return to school buildings on Dec. 1, according to the district’s notice.
“We understand the challenges and anxiety that this may cause you and your children, and we want to assure you that this decision was not taken lightly,” the district said in a prepared statement. “We have been able to do what no other school district around us has been able to, that is be open for in-person instruction, five days a week, for 12 weeks.”
