Despite the COVID-19 pandemic’s second surge, volunteer-based Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful says it’s still possible to help pick up litter in the region.
The group suggests doing a cleanup either solo or with household family members and encourages people to adhere to the recommendations for social distancing. According to the group, all that’s needed is a trash bag, gloves and bright-colored clothing if a cleanup is done near a roadway.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful also says littered masks and gloves can now be added to the estimated 502 million pieces of litter on state roadways. According to the group, most of it is cigarette butts and plastic items.
“We are all tired of seeing litter,” said Keep Pennsylvania President Shannon Reiter. “When we take the initiative to pick up litter in our neighborhoods, we see an immediate improvement. It not only helps prevent litter from reaching our waterways, but sends a strong message that littering will not be tolerated.
“The benefits of removing roadside litter are broad. It removes dangers to people, animals and maintenance equipment, makes our communities more attractive for residents, tourists and potential newcomers and increases property values and community pride. It really benefits everyone.”
