Members of the Charleroi Volunteer Fire Department are upset.
The first responders addressed council Wednesday regarding rumors about the department’s finances and fundraising.
Council President Mark Alterici said there has been misinformation spreading through town and asked Fire Department President Glenn Shipley to explain the struggles the department has faced during the pandemic.
“I want to start out by saying this borough and council as a whole 100% appreciates what you do,” Alterici said. “Anything you hear otherwise is false.
“That being said, the fire department is not getting a good response from the community and businesses when it comes to fundraising efforts.”
The fire department, like others throughout the Mon Valley, has seen a drastic drop in fundraising revenue this year because of the pandemic.
To help generate needed revenue, Shipley said he has had to come up with creative ways for the department to make money.
A food truck owner from South Park recently approached the department to offer to hold a fundraiser, in which a portion of the sales would be donated to the fire department.
