Father John A. Harvey – Pittsburgh, formerly of Monongahela
Father John A. Harvey, 89, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Monongahela, died Monday, Dec. 7, 2020, in Little Sisters of the Poor, Pittsburgh. Born March 14, 1931, in Monongahela, he was the son of Edward and Ellen Higgins Harvey. Father John attended Transfiguration Catholic School as a child and graduated from Monongahela High School in 1949. He received his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from St. Vincent Seminary School in 1965 and was ordained as a Catholic priest on April 11, 1966, in the former St. Richard Catholic Church in Pittsburgh. Over the years, Father John had been assigned to numerous parishes around the Pittsburgh area. He served as parochial vicar at St. Margaret’s, St. Benedict’s and St. Rosalie Catholic churches. Father John worked as assistant chancellor for the Diocese of Pittsburgh from 1972-1984 and held numerous other positions throughout the diocese, including secretary to the bishop, diocesan director, executive secretary, pastor of St. Ann’s in Homestead and appointed member of the National Council of the Society for the Propagation of the faith in New York, N.Y. Surviving are his brother, Thomas J. and wife Angie Harvey of Roanoke, Va.; sister-in-law, Virginia Harvey of Iselin, N.J.; along with four nieces, two nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Father William E. Harvey and William F.; and a sister, Margaret M. Harvey. Friends are invited to attend a visitation from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, at St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, (Transfiguration Church) 722 W. Main St., Monongahela with a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:30 a.m. with the Most Rev. David A. Zubik as celebrant and Bishop Winter con celebrating.
