Community members who live near oil and gas operations, including waste sites such as the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill, can participate in free education sessions to help them protect themselves against possible environmental hazards.
The environmental group Protect PT is hosting the seminars. The first session starts at 7 p.m. today and will deal with issues related to complaints and compliance. Topics will include how to file a complaint, how to follow up with the appropriate agencies and how to understand local laws and regulations governing the gas well industry.
The second session will be held Thursday evening and will address emergency preparedness. Sessions next week will also be held on Tuesday and Thursday, with the first session dealing with air and water quality issues and the final session addressing waste and noise pollution.
Each session will take place on Zoom from 7 to 8:30 p.m., though Protect PT outreach assistant Mary Obringer said anyone who needs to enter the meeting late will be admitted. The sessions may also be viewed at a later date.
“For people who are registered, we are recording the meetings so they will be available upon request by emailing Mary@protectpt.org,” Obringer said. “People don’t have to attend all four, but we recommend all four.”
