Monessen officials, volunteers and organizations are teaming up to collect food for people in need in honor of the MLK Day of Service.
Organized by the Mon Valley NAACP, Monessen/Rostraver Rotary, Monessen Library, Douglas Education Center, Mayor Matt Shorraw and volunteers from the community, food donations are being collected this week and will be distributed Saturday to Monessen residents in the courtyard of city hall.
“This is the first time we’ve done a food drive in honor of the MLK Day of Service,” Shorraw said. “I thought it would be a good idea, since so many people are struggling financially, especially right now due to the economic impacts of the pandemic.”
Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at Joseph’s Nursery, 921 Rostraver St., Monessen, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.
The distribution will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on a first-come, first-served basis.
