The COVID-19 pandemic has taught Ringgold and South Fayette not to take anything for granted.
Both teams opened their winter season Friday and enjoyed the opportunity to face an opponent. The visiting Lions claimed a 51-40 victory, but both teams felt like winners by being able to take the floor for the nonsection game.
Each team had three players in double figures as Nick Peccon scored a game-high 13 points, Deondre Dotson had 11 and Demetrius Butler tallied 10 for the Rams. Logan Yater, Kaden Ring and Alex Hall each had 12 points for South Fayette (1-0).
“It was great to be back in the gym in a competitive atmosphere,” Ringgold coach Eugene Wilson said. “I am just so happy with our bench, they were all so engaged and supportive. The guys who came in did a great job. There are some things for us to tighten up, obviously. We can blame that on COVID and the lack of practices.”
“I love basketball and I love this group of guys, we’re so thankful that we are actually getting (to play),” Lions coach Dave Mislan said. “We shouldn’t take it for granted because you never know, that’s what you learn, how quickly it can be taken away from you.”
