BVA archers get another shot

The Belle Vernon Area Archery Club is on target to start its new season in a new training facility.
The club, which involves about 70 students from elementary through high school, had been using the old cafeteria in the former Rostraver Middle School for practices in the past.
Practices usually start in October or November to prepare for winter tournaments, according to Rostraver resident Jackie Staller, whose son is part of the club, but that schedule was delayed by COVID-19 restrictions. When the group went to start practices again as hybrid classes resumed, it learned that the practice site was no longer available because of renovations being done to the building, Staller said.
“We didn’t realize it was going to affect this program,” she said. “They don’t have anywhere else where they can go.”
Staller said the archery club sets up targets at 10 and 15 meters, with nets to protect the surrounding area. While a standard gym is large enough for practice, most of the gym time in the district is already committed to sanctioned sports programs, Staller said, with club sports getting practice time after the athletic program sports have been scheduled.
“We have tournaments at the high school gym,” she said.
