A Monessen family was displaced Wednesday afternoon after their home caught on fire while a contractor was working on renovations.
Monessen Police Capt. Dave Yuhasz said a contractor was working on remodeling a bathroom on the second floor of the home, which sits near the 1000 block of Valley View Drive, when he heard a popping sound around 4:20 p.m.
“He said he heard a popping, like fireworks going off in the back yard, and when he went outside to check it out, the other side of the house was on fire,” Yuhasz said.
The contractor immediately called 911 and when the homeowners returned from a shopping trip to buy more building supplies, their home was engulfed in flames and smoke.
The home, which used to be a duplex, is now a single-family home, which made the fire hard to put out, officials said.
Yuhasz said the fire presence at the scene was overwhelming.
