Rostraver Central Fire Department crews were called to a structure collapse in the 800 block of Tyrol Boulevard in Rostraver Township Friday afternoon.
The structure, formerly owned by Snyder of Berlin potato chip company and currently owned by Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill, was vacant and no injuries were reported, according to Rostraver Central Fire Department Captain and Rostraver Township Commissioner Devin DeRienzo.
DeRienzo said the structure collapsed under the weight of snow on the roof.
“Unfortunately, it’s an old building,” DeRienzo said. “It dates back to the early ’40s.”
DeRienzo said utilities in the structure have been shut off, and the Westmoreland Sanitary Landfill is scheduled to demolish the building Monday.
Monessen resident Bobby Zupan was driving along Tyrol Boulevard and happened to pull over into the structure’s parking lot just before the building collapsed around 5 p.m.
“I heard a loud boom,” Zupan said. “I looked to the right and saw the building had collapsed. I said ‘That wasn’t like that when I drove by earlier.’”
