Gun owners in Washington County scored a victory Thursday when commissioners voted to become a Second Amendment sanctuary county.
Commissioners Diana Irey Vaughan, Nick Sherman and Larry Maggi approved the resolution unanimously and it went into effect immediately.
A Second Amendment sanctuary, also known as a gun sanctuary, is a state, county or locality in the U.S. that has adopted laws or resolutions that oppose, or purport to prohibit or impede, the enforcement of certain gun control measures.
“I’m so proud of us getting to the essence of the Constitution and what our founding fathers meant for us to do and how we’re meant to govern people,” Sherman said after the motion was approved. “I couldn’t be more supportive of this bill. I think it’s long overdue. I’m excited that all three of us could come together and agree on this.”
Washington County joined nearby Fayette and Greene counties in adopting the resolution.
“In Washington County, we are affirming and upholding both the U.S. Constitution and the Pennsylvania Constitution and our right to bear arms,” Irey Vaughan said Friday. “So we stand here and tell you we will uphold the laws. Our rights will not be infringed.”
