Charleroi Fire Chief Bob Whiten Jr. is amazed there were no injuries Sunday in a car accident and fire along Route 88 in Speers.
The accident occurred around 5:52 p.m. when a southbound vehicle went off the road near the intersection with Grandview Way and sheared off a utility pole. The engine compartment caught fire and threatened the passenger compartment as well, Whiten said.
There were two people in the vehicle at the time of the accident, but both got out of the vehicle without injury.
“The car came within 12 feet of hitting an ice cream place, Kimmie’s Kones,” Whiten said.
There were a number of customers at the ice cream business, Whiten added, but somehow the car missed the building and the vehicles in the parking lot before shearing off a utility pole and coming to rest facing north.
Whiten said West Penn Power was called to the scene to replace the downed pole. Charleroi Regional Police were investigating the cause of the accident.
Mon Valley EMS and Bujanowski Towing also responded to the scene. Firefighters were there for about an hour Sunday evening.
