McKeesport Area School District is planning to hold a prom this year.
During the virtual agenda workshop meeting Wednesday, board President Joe Lopretto revealed the board is slated to vote at next week’s regular meeting on whether to approve a request for $4,000 to pay for security and chaperones for the prom.
As was the case in many school districts in 2020, MASD’s prom had to be canceled as a result of schools being closed due to the coronavirus pandemic and because of state restrictions concerning gatherings.
Lopretto said he is excited a prom is being planned.
“Board action to approve funding in the amount of $4,000 for the 2021 — yes and I’m saying it — prom,” Lopretto said. “I couldn’t be happier for these kids.”
Lopretto asked the board and administrators if anyone wished to comment on the item, but no comments were offered.
The prom is not currently listed on the district’s online calendar. In a message to the Mon Valley Independent after the meeting, district spokeswoman Kristen James said the prom is currently slated for May 27 at the Omni William Penn Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh.
James said more information about prom will be released in the near future.
