Monessen beautifying city

Monessen has moved forward with some beautification efforts this month, which is in line with the city’s comprehensive plan.
The planter boxes along Donner Avenue were ripped out by city employees two weeks ago and the wooden structures were filled with termites and were rotted.
Orchard Church, Community Bank and Alumisource donated $6,240 toward the project, which cost a total of $21,730. Joseph’s Nursery and Garden Center is doing the work.
The city saved money by having public works employees remove the existing planter boxes in-house.
The material for the new boxes will be made of interlocking block and they will be about a foot taller than the old versions. They won’t rot or need to be painted every year and the plants will be perennial so there won’t be as much maintenance all around.
The money will come out of the parks budget, but the city will continue to take donations, and plaques will be made to honor those who do.
Mayor Matt Shorraw said he will also look for funds to improve the sidewalk on Donner Avenue, primarily in the blocks between Fifth and Sixth streets, because he said it’s torn up and is a safety hazard.
