On Monday, Elizabeth Forward was able to make up for its mistakes, beating Greensburg Salem, 7-5, despite seven errors.
On Tuesday, though, those same mistakes proved to be too much.
EF (1-1, 1-1) made six errors in its second game against the Golden Lions, helping lead to a 5-3 loss at Wylie Field.
“We had some mistakes in the first game, but our pitching and hitting came through for us. I just feel like today we dug ourselves too big of a hole,” said Warriors coach Frank Champ. “We’ll clean them up. It’s a young group. We’re learning and getting better each game.”
The fourth inning proved to be crucial, as Greensburg Salem extended its lead from 2-1 to 5-1.
The Warriors allowed two batters who bunted to reach base on errors. The second of those, Dylan Sarsfield, bunted and reached base on a throwing error, bringing in a runner. After Sarsfield, Jacob Smith and Owen Tutich each drove in runs with singles. Tutich’s ball should’ve been caught, but the Warriors misplayed it, allowing it to drop into shallow center field.
“Two different bunt situations where we didn’t get an out hurt us,” Champ said. “We need to make the routine plays, and we talked about that. In a game like this in a tough section, routine plays are the key. Today we just struggled with a few routine plays.”
